Summary

The WindPaddle (U.S. Pat. #7,752,987) is a self-launching, small-watercraft sail for kayaks and canoes. We live in Hood River, Oregon – the windsurfing and kite sailing capital of the USA, so we had reason and inspiration to develop this type of product. And the requisite winds for testing!

goldlogoOur background is engineering, windsurfing and boat/dinghy sailing, with a constant eye out for fun. We looked at the variety of kayak sailing devices on the market and saw inherent flaws in each with regard to a variety of factors, including overall design, operation, safety and cost.

We addressed the problems associated with the rest of the competition, and the WindPaddle was born. We invented a small-watercraft sail that was lightweight yet durable, easy to use, safe and affordable.

It took many trials and iterations before the WindPaddle was the safe and easy-to-use sail currently on the market. Putting our engineering education, our sailing experience and son Alec as the official crash-test dummy to use, we conducted Sea Trials (aka beer-drinking excuses) to explore various design concepts (Son Alec lived thru them all, although the psychological damage should not show up for years)  :)

WindPaddle Adventure Sail

Our BEST SELLING sail intended for the serious sea-kayaker. This is the sail for expeditions on big water and will be pulling hard long after you are ready to head to shore. The “Adventure” will withstand any condition you throw at it. The sturdy and unbreakable perimeter batten maintains sail shape in high winds and allows for high sailing angles.

All WindPaddle sails launch and fly from the on-deck position. It can be set up for instant self-launching either before sailing or while out on the water so there's no need to return to shore to launch your sail!

Features

-Light weight design
-Stiff "expedition-grade" perimeter batten
-Sails (reaches) off-the-wind up to an 180 degree angle or more.

"Most important for me is the versatility of the Windpaddle. You can use it on any craft and it doesn’t turn a kayak or canoe into a complex, heavy sailing craft ." - Hans Heupink (Holland)

Ease of Set-up

We developed the WindHarness which allows you to quickly attach your WindPaddle onto any boat or switch between boats in seconds. If your boat has anything that can be clipped to - including deck lines, cleats, bungees, pad eyes, fairleads, thwarts, handholds on the gunwale or bench seat - you can probably attach your WindPaddle to it!

Ease of Use

The WindPaddle sail deploys in a matter of seconds from the on-deck location. A continuous sheet (or steering line) allows the paddler to easily control the sail while keeping their paddle in their hands for bracing and steering. We also placed a large window in the center panel of the sail for visibility.

Safety

The WindPaddle design puts the center of force of the sail down low, at about the same level as the paddler, making the boat/sail combination incredibly stable and easy-to-use.

The WindPaddle Adventure Sail

Target boat – Touring and Expedition boats 14’ – 18’
Target wind range – 5 – 30 knots (has seen 40+ knots!)
Target paddler – intermediate to expert
Off-wind sailing envelope - +180 degrees

Sail Data:
Deployed diameter - 42" (106.7 cm.)
Coiled/folded diameter - 15" (38.1 cm.)
Sail area - 9.62 sq. ft. (0.8937 sq. m²)
Weight - 13 oz. (0.37

 Accessories

For Kayak and Canoe sailing we offer a nifty set of "clam cleats" for securing your sheets (or sail control lines) as well as a "Sailing Kit". When out on the water sailing, you might want to consider using some of the following:

Sailing Kit -
2 Cleats (with fasteners)
2 Sheets/control lines 7 ft. ea.
1 Paddle Leash
1 Emergency Whistle

Paddle leashes are always a good idea, sailing or not. But for folding where you need to employ both hands and momentarily let go of your paddle, a leash is a must. Its small, its simple, and its functional, perfect for securing your paddle during photo opportunities, snack breaks, or windy passages. Long enough for use while paddling, but small enough for easy out-of-the-way storage. Your dog might not need or want "no stinking leashes", but you do.

Finally, We came up with a sail design that was safe, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, durable, inexpensive, and able to be quickly set-up and taken down while out on the water.
